Die Abu Sayyaf meldet dass sie eine kanadische Geisel geköpft hat nachdem die Frist die 600 Millionen Pesos für seine Freilassung zu bezahlen abgelaufen war . Der Mann war mit einem Norweger und dessen philippinischen Freundin aus einer Ferienanlage von einer Insel vor Davao entführt worden . Der Norweger wurde schon vor etlichen Wochen tot aufgefunden .

Sixteen of the so-called “VIP inmates” at New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City—some of them convicted of drug cases—denied on Wednesday that they were plotting to assassinate President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and incoming Philippine National Police head, Chief Supt. Ronald de la Rosa.

“We are not involved in this plot, if it [is] really true. We are afraid that this might be a way of ‘public conditioning’ so that we will be eventually silenced and the corruption that happened here inside NBP in the previous administration [will] be concealed,” they said in a letter sent to Justice Secretary Emmanuel Caparas through their lawyer Ferdinand Topacio. ... In their letter, the convicts said their transfer may be a prelude to their liquidation because of what they knew about the protection racket of previous NBP officials.

Duterte insists on death penalty by hanging
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has insisted on executing criminals by hanging, just days after Pope Francis issued a statement opposing the death penalty.

Duterte said while critics of capital punishment view it as “inhuman,” criminals under the influence of drugs have been reduced to a “bestial state.”

“I’m asking for re-imposition of death penalty so that I can hang them,” Duterte said yesterday during the turnover ceremony at the Davao City Police Office.

He said there are studies showing that a cable car system could be built in one-and-a-half years.

Klingt doch vieles sehr vernünftig. Der Gedanke mit der Familienplanung ist aus meiner Sicht das Allerwichtigste auf den Philippinen, wenn auch schlecht für uns. Aber damit wird er gewaltig anecken.
Eine Zugverbindung von Manila nach Clark wäre aber mal genial.

Wie fast immer und überall zu Beginn einer Amtszeit: Viele gute und auch weniger gute Pläne und Vorhaben. Wollen mal sehen, was sich umsetzen lässt und was wieder in der Versenkung verschwindet.

Sehenswert: Duterte's Rede zur Amtseinführung
Mit ~15min wesentlich länger als die angekündigten 5min und wesentlich gemäßigter und sinnvoller. Sehr klare Worte und eigentlich nichts, was man kritisieren müsste. Ganz im Gegenteil und anders als seine Reden vor und seit der Wahl. Sogar einen Barong Tagalog hatte er an und die ersten Anweisungen gibt er noch während der Rede aus:
